Miley Cyrus and Andy Cohen were honored at Tuesday night’s amFAR Inspiration Gala for their work fighting AIDS, and Cyrus, who has partnered with Instagram to share transgender and gender-based stories in an effort called #Instapride, brought an agender date, Tyler Ford.

In an effort to educate her fans and followers, Cyrus posted a photo of Ford, who was also a contestant on Oxygen’s The Glee Project, on Instagram, explaining their preferred pronouns. “My whole life, I was led to believe that there were only two genders,” Tyler wrote on Cyrus’ Instagram. “I thought I had to shrink myself to fit into a box that was never going to contain me. It took years for me to find words for my gender identity, and to feel comfortable expressing myself as I am.”

Transgender model Andreja Pejic attended the Gala and told the Associated Press, “I think she is using her celebrity in a positive way and to…create some nice change.”

Cyrus’ #InstaPride campaign will highlight “gender expansive” people around the country over the next two weeks and will serve as an extension of her recently-launched Happy Hippie Foundation.

Cyrus also met Laverne Cox at the event.
