Back in 1939, a carpenter named Georg Elser tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler—and failed. Now, director Oliver Hirschbiegel—who previously covered the last days of Hitler’s reign in 2004’s Oscar-nominated Downfall—is chronicling Elser’s journey in 13 Minutes.
A new trailer for the film, which debuted at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, paints Elser (Christian Friedel) as an apolitical person trying his best to save his country’s people. “I only wanted to prevent even greater bloodshed,” he says.
Problem is, the real-life Elser caused some bloodshed of his own: The bomb he intended for Hitler and other Nazi leaders ended up killing others, and he ultimately was imprisoned before being killed in 1945—just days before Hitler himself died.
