After debuting all the way back on the PlayStation 2, Ratchet & Clank, the lovable lombax and his robotic partner, are returning with a film adaptation and a reboot slated to hit in 2016.
Sony released a first extended look at both, in a trailer that mixes footage from Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker’s theatrical film and the Insomniac Games-produced reboot game. Rather than just re-release a prettier version of the original 2002 game, the new title promises a “re-imagining” of that game. And from the brief glimpses of it, the reboot looks to be doing much more than slapping a new coat of paint on the old game.
Previews seem to suggest that there should be plenty in store to make the experience feel new for those who played through the 2002 game (and replayed it when it was re-released as part of a collection on the PlayStation 3). Production director Shane McCabe told Polygon that the reboot is “a new game that takes elements from the original.” The trailer and previews also indicate just how gorgeous the game is shaping up to look, demonstrating quite the leap from its PlayStation 3 predecessors.
The game will be playable at E3, so expect to hear more about what’s in store next week. The Ratchet & Clank reboot, along with the film, are expected to release sometime in the spring of 2016.
