Power is living up to its name. The show’s season 2 premiere, which aired Saturday, June 6, set a record for most ever viewers for a Starz originals series with 1.43 million live same day viewers contributing to a weekend total of 3.62 million.
The season 2 premiere tripled the audience from the show’s premiere one year ago, which garnered only 462,000 viewers. In other words, the show’s viewership has grown 79 percent from the series premiere. And compared to the season 1 finale, the viewership is up 32 percent.
Among African-Americans, Power was cable’s top Saturday show. And within the Starz family, it bested Spartacus: Vengeance to become the most watched episode ever for Starz originals programming.
So what suddenly made the show such a big hit? Could this be part of the Empire effect? It’s certainly possible, though we’ll have to wait and see if, like Empire, Power can continue to improve upon its ratings sucess.
