Since bursting on the scene as Rage Against the Machine’s guitar virtuouso, Tom Morello has become known for his political activism nearly as much as his chops. Morello has performed acoustic protest songs as The Nightwatchman for a decade, but now he’s elevating his marriage of politics and rock music with the formation of a new label, Firebrand Records.
“Every movement for social change needs a great soundtrack,” Morello tells EW. “Firebrand Records provides a global megaphone for uncompromising artists fighting for a more just world. Firebrand artists walk the walk, and we are proud to amplify their music and their message.”
The label’s initial roster features seven artists from around the globe, including Ramy Essam, a popular Egyptian musician who was tortured and exiled for his role in that country’s revolution, and Son of Nun, who operated a medical tent during the recent Baltimore riots.
Along with Built For The Sea, Lycka Till, and bell’s roar, Morello signed New York rockers The Last Internationale—and EW is proud to share an exclusive stream of their haunting cover of the Mahalia Jackson classic “I’m Going To Live The Life I Sing About In My Song.” “The Last Internationale are the future of rebel rock music,” Morello said. “They have conviction, passion and Delila may very well be the best singer to come along in a generation. She will absolutely blow your mind.”
