John Noble has joined the cast of Elementary as a series regular for season 4, the network announced Wednesday.

The Fringe and Sleepy Hollow star will play Sherlock Holmes’ (Jonny Lee Miller) estranged father, who has only so far been referenced on the CBS series. The elder Holmes was also responsible for bringing Watson (Lucy Liu) into Sherlock’s life as his sober companion.

“We could not be more delighted to have John Noble taking on such an important role,” executive producer Robert Doherty says. “We’ve enjoyed his work for many years now – especially his tremendous run on Fringe – and cannot wait to see him opposite Jonny and Lucy.  It’s going to be an exciting season.”

Mr. Holmes will arrive in the season 4 premiere in the wake of his son’s recent relapse. “Sherlock’s dad, like Sherlock, is a complicated man,” Doherty recently told EW. “When Sherlock has described him, he hasn’t painted a picture of a very loving father… and yet it’s worth noting this will be the second time he’s taken steps to help his son during a difficult time.”

Elementary will return to CBS this fall.
