Patrons of Los Angeles’ W Hotel were (likely) enjoying Monday’s Jazz Night, imbibing in a self-justified pricey cocktail, when Justin Bieber popped onstage. A decidedly un-jazzy artist, the 21-year-old Canadian doubled down on breaking genre norms by going with an R&B standard that’s nearly as old as he is: Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You.”
To the guy’s credit, he didn’t do the slow jam dirty. The brass backing—and those chimes—formed a strong foundation for the Biebs to put his spin on it. The sophomoric thing would have been to try to out-do the original with excessive vocals, but he wasn’t wild. Nice job, but maybe a tux next time?
