Robert De Niro’s The Comedian has found a director. A spokesperson for Mike Newell confirmed a Deadline report that the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Donnie Brasco director will helm the Art Linson-scripted drama. This marks Linson’s second time writing for De Niro, following the 2008 adaptation of his memoir, What Just Happened?
In The Comedian, De Niro will play an insult comic in the style of Don Rickles, with stand-up material being written by Comedy Central Roast mastermind, Jeffrey Ross. The project has been in the works for several years, but recently received a green light and is set to begin filming in November.
De Niro, who recently wrapped the David O. Russell film Joy with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, can next be seen starring alongside Anne Hathaway in Nancy Meyer’s The Intern.
