'Scandal' promotes Portia de Rossi to series regular for season 5

ABC/Nicole Wilder

Elizabeth North is sticking around the White House. Portia de Rossi has been upped to series regular for Scandal’s fifth season, EW has learned.

The Arrested Development star joined the ABC series at the start of season 4 as the cutthroat chairwoman of the RNC who was aligned with former VP Andrew Nichols (Jon Tenney). Though she was the type of character viewers loved to hate, Elizabeth become an asset to the show, especially after Huck (Guillermo Diaz) basically tortured her into submission.

She’ll prove to be an even bigger asset in the fifth season after—SPOILER ALERT—Cyrus (Jeff Perry) was fired as Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) chief of staff, paving the way for Elizabeth to join the White House.

Scandal will return to ABC this fall.
