'Legends of Tomorrow': Here's what you need to know about the big bad Vandal Savage

Updated

DC Comics

Though DC’s Legends of Tomorrow won’t debut until 2016, a trailer for the new Arrow-Flash spinoff released on Thursday dropped a number of spoilers to get fans excited. In addition to the reveal that Caity Lotz will be playing a resurrected Sara Lance, who takes up the mantle of the White Canary, we also discovered who the Legends will be facing off with in both future and past.

In the series, having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat—one that will put not only isthe planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?

Though we didn’t actually spot that immortal threat in the new trailer, his identity is revealed to be Vandal Savage. In the comics, Savage is a brilliant strategist and scientist who has plagued the earth with more than 50,000 years of savagery after gaining powers from a mysterious meteorite. Throughout his history of conquering various lands, Savage claims to have adapted many names, including Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan and Jack the Ripper. Savage, who first appeared in the Green Lantern comics, is also Rip Hunter’s sworn enemy and a member of the Injustice Society. Now the question remains as to who will play him.

The drama—which hails from Arrow and Flash executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, as well as Arrow boss Marc Guggenheim and Sarah Schechter—also stars Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory, Heat Wave), Victor Garber (Martin Stein/Firestorm), Ciara Renee (Kendra Saunders, Hawkgirl) and Franz Drameh (Jay Jackson).

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is slated to debut midseason on The CW.
