You’d be forgiven for thinking the new American Ultra posters make the film look like Adventureland 2, especially as Ultra reunites Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.
The character posters, first debuted at MTV News, offer a first look at Mike and Phoebe, the film’s protagonists. Mike is a far cry, folicly, from another one of his recent roles, Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while Phoebe’s bright orange hair is an unexpected change for Stewart as well. According to director Nima Nourizadeh, both characters’ hair styles are actually important to informing the audience who these characters are.
In Ultra, Mike is hoping to propose to Phoebe, but on their trip out of town when he’s about to pop the question, she discovers he’s actually an agent, and the government is hunting him down. Nourizadeh promises that the film isn’t tied down by genre, but rather will bounce around between romantic, action-oriented, and comedic.
As for the posters themselves, one person involved with the film feels they don’t accurately represent what’s to come. Screenwriter Max Landis posted his thoughts on Twitter, along with a fan poster, stating that combining the official and unofficial posters gives audiences a better idea of what to expect.
