Third Eye Blind might just be the greatest band of 1997. Their sound is forever tied to the year of their eponymous debut record, popularizing songs about crystal meth, attempting to dissuade someone from taking their final leap, and supplying peerless “doo doo doos” vocal harmonies to the world. They could have filled the American Pie soundtrack by themselves.
But the band’s relevancy isn’t completely stuck to that period, even if the music landscape has shifted: “Never Let You Go” would, at most, barely dent the Billboard Hot 100 (which is a shame). Nevertheless, Dopamine, their first album since 2009, is slated for a June 16 release.
Surprisingly, it features a rendition of Beyoncé’s “Mine” from her 2013 omnipresent self-titled album. Their version could have come out back in their big days; their aesthetic never changed. It doesn’t even miss Drake or a stand-in for him! Give it a listen, and watch the video that occurs at a low-key, very adult-looking party.
