  • Academy Award winners and real-life couple Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz will be starring in the Pablo Escobar biopic Escobar, based on the best-selling Spanish-language memoir Loving Pablo, Hating EscobarFernando Leon de Aranoa (A Perfect Day, Mondays in the Sun, Familia) will direct from his own screenplay. The movie will follow Escobar’s rise to become one of the most powerful drug lords of all time. The film is expected to start shooting later this year. [The Hollywood Reporter]

  • Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara will co-star in the indie drama Collateral Beauty, which centers around a New York advertising executive who suffers a terrible tragedy and finds himself slipping into a dark state of depression.   • Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening will star in a movie adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, which centers around the romantic and artistic conflict between four characters. The film will shoot in upstate New York this summer. [Variety]

  • Eight-year-old Disney XD star Mckenna Grace has been cast as Daisy in Independence Day 2. The cast currently includes Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lance Lim, Sela Ward, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A.   • Camilla Luddington and Jonathan Pryce are boarding the romantic comedy The Healer. The film centers around a man with an unwanted gift for healing who meets a teenager with cancer who helps him to find himself. The film is set to shoot in Nova Scotia beginning June 4. [The Hollywood Reporter]

  • Kate Walsh, Anthony Rapp and Jonathan Bennett will be starring in the gay marriage drama Modern Love. Joshua Tunick will direct from his own script, which follows an close group of friends and family who gather at the home of two gay men for their wedding. But when the big day doesn’t go perfectly, the group helps the couple see that all marriages have their challenges. Shooting will start in the Los Angeles area on June 8. [Variety]
