ABC's fall schedule: 'Muppets' open Tuesdays

The Muppets have a home: ABC’s just-released fall schedule (below) has the broadcaster’s fresh take on the classic puppet ensemble launching Tuesday nights, while two big-swing new dramas are coming to Sunday.

ABC’s revival of The Muppets will explore the characters’ personal lives for the first time in a docusoap-style series from Big Bang Theory executive producer Bill Prady, and will run on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., where it will be paired with Fresh Off the Boat. The network keeps trying to establish a strong comedy beachhead on Tuesdays, but last fall both titles were short-lived. The move shows that ABC is continuing to try and expand its comedy reach beyond its Wednesday block, even as rival NBC shrinks its fall comedy offerrings to a mere one hour a week.

Later on Tuesdays, after the return of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ABC will launch at 10 p.m. its promising new thriller Quantico, about a group of FBI recruits that include a suspected terrorist mastermind.

Later in the week, ABC is replacing Friday’s canceled comedy Cristela with new title Dr. Ken, which stars Ken Jeong (Community) as a physician and family man with no bedside manner. Dr. Ken at 8:30 p.m. will get a lead-in from Last Man Standing, which squeaked into a renewal this weekend.

On Sunday, ABC will launch two new dramas after the return of 8 p.m.’s Once Upon a Time. The first is Oil, which marks the return of Don Johnson to primetime as a ruthless oil tycoon in North Dakota. At 10 p.m. there’s Of Kings and Prophets, which is billed as an epic Biblical saga as told through the eyes of a “battle-weary king, a powerful and resentful prophet and a resourceful young shepherd on a collision course with destiny.”

ABC is holding plenty of shows for midseason as well, like Shonda Rhimes’ latest The Catch, the return of Agent Carter, its True Detective-esque crime drama Wicked City, and its new take on Uncle Buck

But perhaps the biggest surprise on ABC’s fall schedule is how little has changed. Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays are the basically the same as this season. See for yourself below, and we’ll have trailers for the new shows in a couple hours.
