Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron barreled its way into North American theaters with an estimated opening day gross of $84.5 million, according to studio reports. That’s a bigger take than The Avenger‘s $80.8 million Friday numbers from 2012, and just a few million shy of the all-time best opening day haul of $91.1 million for 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 2.
Age of Ultron also grabbed $27.6 million in Thursday night preview screenings, bringing its total domestic gross to $112 million before the weekend’s even fully begun.
And the film is still on track to challenge the all-time opening weekend record holder, which happens to be its predecessor The Avengers ($207.4 million) on the same early May weekend in 2012.
Age of Adaline, Furious 7, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, and Home rounded out Friday’s top five at the box office, according to estimates from BoxOfficeMojo.com.
