UPDATE: MovieTickets.com isn’t the only site with gigantic presale numbers. According to Fandango, presale tickets for Avengers: Age of Ultron are equal to the past Fandango presales for all previous Marvel Studios films combined.
EARLIER: With a sweeping press campaign and massive international numbers, it’s no secret that Avengers: Age of Ultron is gearing up for an enormous debut. And now, presale ticket data released by MovieTickets.com indicates the same thing: Age of Ultron is likely to see huge box office numbers when it opens stateside this weekend.
At this point in the sales cycle, Age of Ultron advance ticket sales are almost four times greater than the number sold for the first Avengers, and almost five times greater than Iron Man 3. Presale tickets for Age of Ultron launched almost two months ago, and the numbers keep going up as the premiere date gets closer: In the last 24 hours, Ultron advance tickets made up 84 percent of all tickets sold at MovieTickets.com.
After opening in 44 international territories last weekend, Age of Ultron earned more than $200 million worldwide, debuting as the No. 1 film in every place it appeared. Those 44 territories only make up about half of the global marketplace, and the film hasn’t even opened yet in other big markets like China and Spain.
Over the past few weeks, Furious 7 has held on tight to the No. 1 box office spot, and it has broken plenty of records along the way. The first Avengers is the third highest-grossing movie of all time, but Furious 7 has shot up the list, currently sitting at No. 5. Ultron will almost certainly dethrone Furious 7 at the box office this weekend, but with the amount of hype surrounding its debut, it could break some of those big records that Furious 7 just set.
