California may soon pay official homage to one of the men who defined culture and comedy in the San Francisco Bay Area. Via a 77-0 vote Thursday, the California Assembly approved naming a prominent tunnel north of the Golden Gate Bridge after the late actor Robin Williams, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
The tunnel provides a route for Highway 101 from the Golden Gate Bridge to the North Bay and Marin County, where Williams spent much of his life. Colloquially known as the “Waldo Tunnel” because it cuts through the Waldo Grade, the tunnel has no official name.
The proposal stems from more than Williams’ ties to the area. One side of the tunnel is painted with a double rainbow, which should remind Mork & Mindy fans of the colorful suspenders Williams wore on the show.
The bill next moves to the state senate’s Transportation Committee.
