ACLU celebrates marriage equality milestone with pop culture supercut

“Everyone wants someone to grow old with. And shouldn’t everyone have that chance?”

That line, uttered by Estelle Getty’s Sophia on The Golden Girls, serves as the centerpiece to a new video from the ACLU that compiles decades of pop-culture footage to celebrate the history of marriage-equality in TV and movies.

“In 1979, the ACLU filed the first freedom-to-marry lawsuit in the United States,” the ACLU writes. “We are now at the Supreme Court to fight to win the freedom to marry for couples in all 50 states. As we get closer than ever before to the freedom to marry for all, let’s take a walk down memory [lane].”

The supercut features memorable scenes from the likes of The Wire, Orange Is the New Black, The Simpsons, and more, all to the tune of Tegan and Sara’s “Closer.”
