The new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was viewed more than 88 million times during its first 24 hours of life on the internet, meaning millions of viewers have likely fallen in love with BB-8. The droid, which first appeared in the initial Force Awakens teaser, was an instant breakout star — and that was before it was revealed to be a practical effect (director J.J. Abrams even rolled BB-8 out during Star Wars Celebration). But for all of those jealous that a real BB-8 exists, there’s now a way to recreate one at home.
Industrial designer Christian Poulsen made his own miniaturized version of BB-8 from a Sphero ball. And he completed the design in under a day.
You can see the results of Poulsen’s DIY droid below. If the video of Poulsen’s design proves inspiring, he’s posted directions on how, with a Sphero 1.0 and a few magents, to build the droid. This version will have to suffice until Disney inevitably releases official versions of the lovable droid for mass consumption.
