A week after jumping off the Coachella stage mid-(amazing)-performance and breaking her foot, Florence Welch and her band, the Machine, headed back to the desert Sunday night for their Weekend Two set—making good on the singer’s promise not to cancel gigs due to injury. Welch took her performance time down to 30 minutes, delivering hits while sitting on a stool, but gave the fans a sweet surprise to compensate for her inability to prowl the stage with wild abandon: Father John Misty.
Welch introduced Josh Tillman, who produces music as Father John Misty, saying, “To make up for my foot being broken, and not being able to stand for you. I thought we should give you something really special.” Tillman asked, “What have you gotten me into?” and the two were off, into an acoustic rendition of The Everly Brothers’ 1960 track, “Love Hurts.”
Welch’s How Big How Blue How Beautiful is due out June 1 in the U.K and June 2 Stateside. She’ll continue touring in support of the new record despite her injury.
