Cannes unveils 2015 festival lineup

Star-studded films from Woody Allen, Todd Haynes, and Gus Van Sant will highlight the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, as the lineup was officially announced in Paris on Thursday morning. Allen’s Irrational Man, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone in a college campus set romance, marks the director’s 13th visit to Cannes, and his first since Midnight in Paris. Haynes will debut Carol, a 1950s-set drama with Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Kyle Chandler. Van Sant will unveil the Matthew McConaughey movie, Sea of Trees, the story of a suicidal American who gets lost in the Japanese wilderness. 

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, which is playing in-competition. Allen’s film is playing out of competition, along with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Pixar film Inside Out, and King Fu Panda director Mark Osborne’s The Little Prince, based on the classic children’s bookA Tale of Love and Darkness, a film about Israeli-Palestinian politics that is directed by and stars Natalie Portman, is one of six films debuting with a special screening. The opening-night film will be Emmanielle Bercot’s Standing Tall. The festival begins on May 13.
