Bestselling author Leslie Jamison, National Book Award winner Phil Klay, and Cynthia Bond, a favorite author of Oprah Winfrey, have been shortlisted for awards from the PEN American Center, the organization announced Thursday.
Finalists in a wide range of subjects and genres were listed by the literary and human rights organization. Jamison’s bestseller The Empathy Exams is a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, which comes with a $10,000 prize. Klay (Redeployment) and Bond (Ruby) are both nominated for the $25,000 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction. Writer Elizabeth Kolbert’s The Sixth Extinction is a nominee for a $10,000 science writing award.
The majority of the PEN winners will be announced on May 13, with the remaining categories coming on June 8. A full list of this year’s candidates can be found here.
