“I’ve made up my mind, and this year, we shall attack Paris.” Just a few weeks ago, King Ragnar Lothbrok clearly established a new foreign policy for his bearded band of warriors: To sail south into Frankia and attack the nigh-legendary walled city of Paris. Last week, the Northmen arrived, set up camp, and prepared for battle.
And on tomorrow night’s episode of Vikings, they attack. The show has had large battle sequences before, but “To the Gates” is the show’s “Blackwater” moment, with the Northmen staging a full-scale assault from land and sea. The “sea” part of that equation required the production to build some elaborate Viking battle machines, including massive ladders. To whet your appetite, EW is excited to share some behind-the-scenes images from the production, including some original concept art and a shot of Vikings star Clive Standen on the set. (Post-production will remove the greenscreen—and presumably add in a few hundred more axe-wielding warriors.)
