UPDATE: Yoko Ono has posted a statement on her website:
I’m very saddened by Cynthia’s death. She was a great person and a wonderful mother to Julian.
She had such a strong zest for life and I felt proud how we two women stood firm in the Beatles family.
Please join me in sending love and support to Julian at this very sad time.
Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon’s first wife and the mother of Julian Lennon, has died at 75. She suffered from cancer.
Lennon’s representative provided the following statement:
Cynthia Lennon passed away today at her home in Mallorca, Spain following a short but brave battle with cancer. Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time.
Cynthia met and married John in 1962, when she was 18. One year her junior, John was poised for stardom as a part of The Beatles. In 1963 the Lennons had their only son, Julian, and after a brief and rocky marriage they divorced in 1968, after Cynthia learned John had impregnated Yoko Ono—whom he married the following year.
Cythnia would later write two books about her life with the Beatle: 1980’s A Twist of Lennon and 2005’s John.
