We gave it an A-

For the past 40 years, Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado has thrown on his safari jacket and traveled to the most remote and troubled corners of the planet, returning with indelible images. In these often harrowing, occasionally beautiful (frequently both) portraits, he artfully uses light and shadow to capture the human condition of sweat- and dirt-caked South American gold miners, haunted Bosnian war refugees, and emaciated victims of African famine. With this heartbreaking yet hopeful new documentary about his life’s work, Salgado shares the stories behind these split-second black-and-white moments, giving them even more dimension. His images may bear witness to unspeakable horrors, but deep down they’re really all about the same thing: empathy. A–
