'Scandal' to introduce Cyrus'...wife? Plus: Find out who's returning

After four seasons, Scandal is finally going to dig deeper into Cyrus Beene’s past.

Ahead of Sunday’s PaleyFest panel celebrating the ABC series, EW got the scoop on an upcoming flashback episode that will delve into Cyrus’ (Jeff Perry) past and feature the previously announced return of Dan Bucatinsky as James Novak, Cyrus’ late husband. But the hour will flash even further back to introduce Cyrus’ never-before-seen wife, whom he was married to before coming out.

“I know who’s playing [his wife], but I’m not allowed to talk about it,” Perry tells EW. “Shonda [Rhimes] wrote a really Cyrus-centric episode. How did this man come to be this man? She wanted to go into three or four different time periods of his experience. A couple of them are about James and Cyrus and they even have a bit of a reverberation and a facet of something that haunts Cyrus.”

To seemingly round out seeing the evolution of Cyrus’ relationships, Matthew Del Negro will also return in that episode as Michael, the prostitute whom Cyrus is now forced to marry.

The episode will also feature the return of former Vice President Sally Langston (Kate Burton), whom Tony Goldwyn says “comes back in rare form.” EW has also learned that George Newbern will reprise his role as B613 hitman and Quinn (Katie Lowes) love interest Charlie, while Paul Adelstein returns as smarmy campaign consultant and Abby (Darby Stanfield) love interest Leo Bergen.

Scandal airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
