Singer and actress Zendaya has taken to social media for her latest response to Giuliana Rancic, who sparked outrage on Monday’s episode of Fashion Police when she said of Zendaya’s Oscars dreadlocked hairdo, “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil and weed.” After Zendaya posted a statement on Instagram and Twitter, Rancic issued a public apology on E!, saying, “This has really been a learning experience for me. I’ve learned a lot today.”

In a reply posted on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday afternoon, Zendaya picked up on that thread, writing that she was “glad it was a learning experience”—effectively standing her ground and refusing to give Rancic an easy out while still making peace. Keeping the conversation civil was all part of her message, as she said that she’d been tempted to write her initial statement from a place of anger before deciding to do her research: “I couldn’t be scared, wait it out, nor could I just stand up for me; I had to do it for WE. It is important in this journey to remember that just because someone has inflicted hurt upon us, it does not give us the right to do the same.” Read her full response below.
