Afroman was arrested Feb. 17 after assaulting a fan onstage at a Biloxi show, according to the Biloxi Police Department. He’s since been released after paying a $330 bond.
Video of the assault surfaced online Feb. 18. It shows a woman dancing beside Afroman onstage before he turns around and hits her, causing her to fall to the ground. The rapper spoke to TMZ later that day to apologize for his actions, claiming he’s “enrolling in some anxiety foundation.”
According to Afroman, a man was “yelling some obscenities” from the side of the stage during the performance, and he thought the man had come onstage next to him. “When people get onstage, you don’t know what they’re doing, you don’t know what’s going to happen next,” he said. “I’m just trying to do my job.” He turned around and hit the person, who turned out to be a woman—not the man.
Afroman told TMZ he thought he “was wrong” for doing that, and says that day’s schedule put him off-balance. “It was an early show. I usually play at night and I’ve had my dinner and I medicate, I get right. But it was an early show,” he said. “I had my frustrations, to make a long story short.”
The venue’s owner, Chase Taylor, told the Associated Press the show was stopped. “Afroman was about five songs into his set when the incident occurred,” Taylor told the AP. “We pulled the plug on him, and security met him at the bottom of the stage to escort him outside, where he was taken into custody.”
Kress Live, the venue where Afroman was performing, was not immediately available for comment.
