NBC has launched an internal investigation into the claims made by Brian Williams regarding his experience in Iraq more than 12 years ago, according to an internal email from NBC News President Deborah Turness.
“As you would expect, we have a team dedicated to gathering the facts to help us make sense of all that has transpired,” Turness wrote in the email. “We’re working on what the best next steps are – and when we have something to communicate we will of course share it with you.”
The Associated Press reports Richard Esposito, the head of NBC’s investigative unit, will be leading the investigation.
Williams apologized for his “mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago,” saying he only meant to honor and thank the veteran (Command Sgt. Major Tim Terpak), whom he originally said protected him and his crew after their helicopter was hit and crippled by enemy fire in Iraq in 2003.
No word yet on whether Williams will appear on Friday’s episode of Nightly News.
