Sam Smith and Tom Petty recently settled a copyright dispute that ended with Petty received a co-writing credit on Smith’s “Stay With Me”—but the “Free Fallin'” singer says he has “never had any hard feelings toward Sam.”
The dispute centered around the similarities between Smith’s 2014 hit “Stay With Me” and Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” released in 1989. “All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen,” Petty wrote in a statement on his website. “Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement.”
He went on to call the incident “a musical accident, no more no less,” and wished “Sam all the best for his ongoing career.” Read the entire statement on his official website.
