The Keating Five’s plan to hide Sam’s murder has hit a very big snag with the arrival of Marcia Gay Harden during Thursday’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder. Dun, dun, dunnnn: The Oscar-winning actress is actually playing Sam’s sister, Hannah Keating, who is not a big fan of Annalise (Viola Davis).
During the midseason premiere, it was revealed that Annalise is helping the Keating Five get away with murder because she believes her philandering hubby killed his sorority girl mistress Lila Stangard, which she used as proof to get her client, Rebecca (Katie Findlay), off for that crime. But Hannah has thrown a wrench in the plan after telling the police her bro is not a killer.
“First of all, it’s a woman who really never embraced [Annalise] in the family,” Davis says. “I know so many relationships like that, especially with interracial relationships. It’s that generation. It’s not so much like that anymore. The newer generation is much better with it. Me and Marcia Gay Harden’s generation is just unsettling. You’ll see that relationship be very contentious because it’s a woman who just never accepted me. She loved Sam’s ex-wife much more than she loved me. She was more of an acceptable mate for Sam. But it was never spoken of course. You’ll see a lot of butting heads because there’s a resistance on Hannah’s part to admit that she never accepted me. And then there’s a resistance on my part of knowing that she’s on my side, and of course she’s not because she suspects that I killed Sam.”
But Hannah may find an ally in Bonnie (Liza Weil)—who always seemed to have an attraction to Sam, even if she rebuffed his advances—since Annalise is purposefully keeping the truth about Sam’s death from her. “There’s going to be a fallout when she finds out what happened and Marcia Gay Harden’s character is going to be searching for answers as well,” Weil says. “Part of that search might be compelling to Bonnie.”
How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
