Zac Efron has signed on to Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, a film about two brothers who create an online ad to find dates for a wedding only for the ad to go viral. Chernin Entertainment and Fox are looking to fill the role of Efron’s brother for the film, which they hope will be similar to the Sandra Bullock–Melissa McCarthy team-up, The Heat. [Variety]
Adam Pally (The Mindy Project) will be joining Robert De Niro and Zac Efron for Dirty Grandpa. The comedy, set to come out in summer 2016, is about an uptight guy in his 20s (Efron) who is stuck on a road trip with his “foul-mouthed, sex-obsessed grandfather” (De Niro). Pally will be playing Efron’s rude thirty-something cousin. The cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch and Dermot Mulroney. [Deadline]
Stanley Tucci will be playing the villain in the upcoming Patient Zero, a film in which, “an unprecedented global pandemic of a super strain of rabies has resulted in the evolution of a new species driven by violence.” Tucci will play a professor who becomes infected and “determined to crash the lab that’s working on a cure and thwart the search for Patient Zero.” [Deadline]
Pilou Asbæk (Lucy) has taken on the role of Pontius Pilate in the upcoming remake of the Roman epic, Ben-Hur. The film tells the story of a Jewish Prince (Jack Huston) who is forced into slavery by his former childhood friend, Messala (Toby Kebbell). [The Wrap]
Rose McGowan, whose short film Dawn received praise at last year’s Sundance, will make her feature directorial debut with the psychological thriller, The Pines. In the film, “a troubled young woman’s dreams of stability are threatened by a family of healers who could help save her mind, or lose it completely.” Sundial Pictures and Tangerine Entertainment will produce the film, which has a fall shoot scheduled for upstate New York.
Mollee Gray (Teen Beach Movie) has taken the lead in the indie film “Deceived.” Gray will be playing Amanda, who learns she has become pregnant by her boyfriend, Connor, but that he has also impregnated another young girl, Heather. Amanda plans to have her infertile older sister adopt her baby, but “Heather just may be a murderous sociopath who’s out to eliminate her romantic rival altogether, even before Amanda’s baby is born.” [The Wrap]
