The easygoing, hypnotic groove of Twin Wave’s new single “Feel You” comes on gently, lulling a listener into such a blissed-out state that you might not realize at first how much it has going on. But there’s actually a lot happening behind its mellow vibe.

Listen to it enough times and you’ll notice that while slow-rolling drums and chiming, verbed-out guitars read as pretty straightforward 2015 indie rock, the call-and-response vocals could easily have been lifted from a ’70s soul slow jam. It’s the rare smart song that doesn’t go out of its way to show off how smart it is.

The Brooklyn quintet will release its second EP this spring.
