In 1994, long before he won an Oscar, thanked himself for said Oscar, and ushered in “the McConnaissance” with a Miller Lite in hand, Matthew McConaughey was just a student at the University of Texas at Austin with a couple commercials under his belt and dreams of being an actor.

But Richard Linklater saw something when he cast McConaughey as the effortlessly cool, just-short-of-creepy David Wooderson in his stoner classic Dazed and Confused. And now we know why. Footage from a very, very young McConaughey’s audition has found its way online, giving us a raw look at the actor without all the Oscar-winner glitter.
