Pottermore Christmas, day 6: Is Snape a vampire?

Posted on

Pottermore 06

Judging from the past few days, it seemed like the new material in this “12 days of Pottermore Christmas” was probably just the riddles. However, today’s backstories were a bit juicier, as they addressed the fan theory that says Snape is a vampire.

As we hit the midway point of the 12 days of Pottermore Christmas, today’s riddle brings us back to Slughorn’s Christmas party in the Half-Blood Prince:

With vampires and authors and a gatecrashing Malfoy,

Slughorn’s Christmas party is one for (almost) all to enjoy,

much to the surprise of fans, friends and the rest,

which loony Ravenclaw does Harry bring as a guest?

Loony? Ravenclaw? No duh—it’s Luna Lovegood. Today’s treat is an animated invitation to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas Party, where the site opens up to some festive music and a party scene full of wizards and witches.

We also get a new piece titled “Vampires,” a subject which Harry and the rest of the students learned about in their Defense Against Dark Arts classes. And yes, there were vampires in the Hogwarts world; according to the passage, one such vampire, Sanguini, made a “comic appearance” at Slughorn’s party. Likewise, J.K. Rowling reveals that in her earlier drafts, she came up with a vampire, “Trocar,” who never made it into the books.

Rowling also dispelled rumors that Snape is a vampire, noting, “While it is true that he has an unhealthy pallor, and is sometimes described as looking like a large bat in his long black cloak, he never actually turns into a bat, we meet him outside the castle by daylight, and no corpses with puncture marks in their necks ever turn up at Hogwarts. In short, Snape is not a re-vamped Trocar.”

Head on over to Pottermore to “join” (a.k.a. click on) the holiday festivities.
