There weren’t many jokes Jon Stewart could open with last night. Following the news that a Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict police officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner—a decision that triggered waves of protest across New York City—Stewart spent the first few moments of The Daily Show trying to process the event.
“If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more f—ing time,” Stewart said. He then highlighted the reasons for the public frustration over the decision: literally none of the ambiguities that existed under the controversial grand jury decision in Ferguson, Missouri last week were present in the Garner case, and yet the decision remained the same.
“I’m going to need a segue. I’m going to need a little piece of video footage to change the mood here,” said Stewart, queueing up a cute cat video.
It doesn’t help.
