'How to Get Away with Murder': Did Bonnie Kill Sam? Liza Weil defends the most likely suspect

Bonnie Winterbottom killed Sam Keating—at least that’s what the How to Get Away with Murder fans think.

“So many people still think it’s me,” Liza Weil tells EW on the set of the ABC drama. “You guys did the odds poll and I’m still No. 1. I’m still getting emails from family members and friends. A lot of people think [sleeping with Asher] was Bonnie’s alibi.”

Annalise’s (Viola Davis) right-hand woman gained traction as a suspect after viewers got to see her icy side toward the students, while at the same time showing a soft spot for her boss’ husband, which could be motive enough if she somehow feels slighted by Sam (Tom Verica). But Weil is quick to point out why Bonnie may not be the murderer.

“Her heart lies with Annalise,” she says. “Everything that she does operates from a motivation of really thinking that it’s the right thing to do and she really is protecting Annalise’s best interests. She really respects Annalise, maybe to an unhealthy degree.”

Still, she’ll certainly be tested as Sam exploits Bonnie’s feelings for him as he faces increasingly animosity from Annalise after the discovery that Lila Stangard was pregnant. “As the noose gets tightened around him, he just reacts in a way to save his own ass,” Verica says. “Initially it’s about saving his own marriage, but then it falls squarely on him to get out of being the accused murderer. [Bonnie] becomes the road for him to use in trying to get around this.”

But how does Bonnie feel in return? “My idea of Bonnie is that she’s somebody who works really hard, always put her career before romance, she’s a bit of a late bloomer and has a little bit of arrested development when it comes to relationships,” Weil says. “Annalise and Sam are almost like these odd parental figures that have a little bit of an Oedipal element to them. I don’t think Bonnie has many core people for her life. She has deep love for Sam and Annalise and maybe the coloring of that gets skewed sometimes. She also works so hard in that environment that Sam is this distraction that seems innocent at first, but her feelings get a little too inappropriate.”

Whether that means Bonnie and Sam actually have a prior relationship remains to be seen, but a wedge will be driven between Annalise and Bonnie during this Thursday’s episode, which culminates in an incident that may be the catalyst for Bonnie’s sudden tryst with Asher (Matt McGorry).

How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
