EW has confirmed that Joan Allen and William H. Macy have been added to the cast of Room, the film adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2010 book of the same name, which is based on the 2008 kidnapping case of Elisabeth Fritzl.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will center around the titular room and its inhabitants; Brie Larson stars as Ma, a woman kidnapped as a teenager for seven years with her 5-year old son, Jack (Jacob Tremblay). The film will be told from the perspective of Jack, who sees the room as his home, while Ma sees it as a prison. Allen and Macy previously starred together in Pleasantville in 1998.
The film will be directed by Lenny Abrahamson, with a script by Donoghue. Element Pictures, Film4, Irish Film Board, and No Trace Camping are producing, with A24 signed up as domestic distributor.
Production is set to begin soon in Toronto.
