We gave it a C

Despite adoration from such tastemakers as Lester Bangs and Fred Armisen, the British punk-country outfit the Mekons have remained a cult product for most of the past 30-plus years, thanks to a difficult-to-quantify sound and sheer bad luck. Director Joe Angio presents the group’s music with the contagious enthusiasm of a diehard, but exuberance is no substitute for storytelling, and Revenge of the Mekons is in desperate need of a narrative path. Not even the buoyant, self-deprecating spirit that spills from the band members can mask the fact that Angio never makes the most fundamental case: why there should be a Mekons movie in the first place.
