Fox may have a fictional Latvian basketball player in New Girl‘s Winston, but a new comedy in development brings some professional NBA talent to the network.
EW can confirm that Fox has made a script commitment to a half-hour comedy loosely based on NBA all-star Baron Davis’ life. The untitled single-camera comedy will be written by The Cleveland Show‘s Courtney Lilly and tell the story of a kid from South Central who, thanks to a scholarship, is able to attend a prestigious suburban school. With this change, he has to learn how to balance the two different facets of his home and school life.
Davis grew up in South Central but landed a basketball scholarship to the private school Crossroads in Santa Monica. Davis went on to play for 13 years in the NBA, including tenures with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New York Knicks, and was named an all-star player twice.
20th Century Fox TV will produce the show along The Walcott Company’s Jake Johnson and Max Winkler.
