It’s a sign of the post-ironic times when a singing nun wins the Italian version of The Voice and sings “Like a Virgin” as her debut single.
The Voice of Italy winner Sister Cristina Scuccia, who won over audiences and the Internet with her rendition of Alicia Key’s “No One,” went with Madonna’s 1984 classic, “Like a Virgin,” as her debut single, turning the pop song into a sincere power ballad. Omitting the more racy lyrics, Scuccia sings in front of religious monuments in Venice, Italy, highlighting the more pious elements of the song.
In an interview with the Catholic paper Avvenire, Scuccia said she chose the song, “With no intention to provoke or scandalize. Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people. To rescue them from their past.”
Scuccia’s album is out Nov. 11.
