In celebration of its Oct. 20 “One to Watch” issue, People honored 40 rising stars—including Natalie Dormer, Billy Eichner, Danielle Brooks, Sam Heughan, Karla Souza, Ben Feldman, Gina Rodriguez, Travis Fimmel, Kiernan Shipka, and Meghan Trainor—on Thursday night in Los Angeles.
“It’s great to get the memo,” Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones, told EW of her “One to Watch”status. “The response that Game of Thrones has had, for all of us as a cast, has just been extraordinary.” Next up for the British actress is tackling Cressida in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, a role that she had to shave half of her head, which she called “a small price to pay”: “To join The Hunger Games family was about the biggest jackpot in the last couple of years you could hope to win.”
Comedian Billy Eichner was equally—and winkingly—grateful. “It’s really fun and it was unexpected and very flattering. I think I’m the oldest ‘One to Watch,’so there’s something unique and special about that, too,” the 36-year-old said.
On the horizon, Eichner is returning to Parks and Recreation for what he calls a “great, moving, funny final season” and to Funny or Die’s Billy on the Street, which was widely popularized with a bit at this year’s Emmys.
Souza, who plays Laurel Castillo on How to Get Away With Murder, summed up the honor best, explaining that it isn’t a singular effort. Rather, it came as the result of a brilliant producer, Shonda Rhimes, and an amazing cast and storytelling—in Souza’s option, “the perfect ingredients to make someone ‘One to Watch.'”
The issue is on newsstands now.
