Miley Cyrus’ date to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards has been sentenced to six months in jail for violating probation.
Cyrus brought Jesse Helt, a homeless man she met at a shelter for homeless youth, to the VMAs and gave him the chance to accept the award for Video of the Year on her behalf. Helt used the opportunity to discuss homeless youth in an emotional speech that made headlines the next day—and brought to light the warrant that was out for his arrest in Oregon.
Helt pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal mischief and criminal trespass in 2010 and was subsequently sentenced to probation. After the warrant for his arrest was made public, Helt turned himself in.
According to the Associated Press, Helt told the judge that he’d “like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society.”
