Jonathan Bennett looks sexy with his hair pushed back, but you already knew that.
That moment is just one of many the actor plans to recreate in a tribute piece for the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls on Monday night’s Dancing with the Stars, just days after (the unofficial) National Mean Girls Day on Oct. 3. EW got an exclusive first look inside rehearsal while Bennett and partner Allison Holker prepared.
“You come on the show and they say ‘We want you to do Mean Girls stuff’ and I said ‘Of course,'” Bennett tells EW. “I want to do it for the fans cause the fans love it. Of course I want to do Mean Girls things, why not? I think it’s great.” So just exactly what things can we expect? For one, don’t expect Bennett and Holker to reenact the Plastics’ “Jingle Bell Rock” routine. Though the iconic holiday song made a memorable moment in the film, it will only be a small part of the dance, with four other female dancers dressing up in the signature sexy Santa outfits. Something about “Jingle Bell Rock” didn’t exactly scream samba to Holker and instead she chose anotherMean Girls staple, Kelis’ “Milkshake.”
Bennett and Holker joke you could probably play a drinking game trying to catch the rest of the Mean Girls references throughout the piece. “Allie Holker did the amazing thing of incorporating the iconic parts of Mean Girls and turning them into dance moves,” Bennett says. “There are moments in the movies that are acted out that we now dance out.”
But considering he was was almost eliminated from the competition last week, Bennett feels an extra push to do better with this dance. “The pressure is definitely on to do a really good job. The pressure is on to do dance moves that are spot on, the content is where it needs to be. That’s what the judges will criticize. But I came to the show to have fun. It’s a competition, but we want to have fun as well.”
Holker agrees “You can’t take your life too seriously. You have to enjoy it and really entertain with this number.” Though Bennett was the star of the movie, he gives all the credit for the idea of the dance to Holker. “She’s a genius. The fact that the show came to her and was like ‘We need you to do Mean Girls and we need you to do samba at the same time. Dance!’ That’s a very hard thing to do all in one number, and I don’t think it’s ever been done on the show before.”
For Bennett, competing on the show while celebrating 10 years since the movie was released is extra special. “To do a crazy cool interpretation of Mean Girls on the 10th anniversary on DWTS. It’s like triple jackpot on the slot machine.”
Check out a sneak peek of the couple in action before they show us the full number tonight on Dancing with the Stars at 8 p.m. on ABC.
