Stream Yelle's new Dr. Luke-produced album 'Completement Fou'

Posted on

America’s always been a tough market for French pop music, especially if it’s sung in French. The Singing Nun managed to top the U.S. pop charts in 1963 with “Domenique,” and Jordy’s 1992 “Dur dur d’être bébé! (It’s Tough to Be a Baby)” made it to No. 58 on the Hot 100. (Weirdly, according to Wikipedia it reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart.) Aside from Daft Punk’s handful of hits (all sung in English), that’s about the extent of the French presence on American radio.

Superproducer Dr. Luke is gambling that we’re ready for a change. On Sept. 30, his label Kemosabe Records will release Complètement Fou, the latest album from the French pop duo Yelle, who have gone to No. 2 in their home country but so far remain a cult concern in the States. The album, whose title translates approximately to “bonkers,” was recorded by the duo then handed off to Dr. Luke and his team to be polished into the lethally infectious stuff that they send up the charts on a regular basis. It could be catchy enough to make an American audience get over the language barrier.
