Season 29 of Survivor kicked off this evening, and due to the last minute cancellation of the Redemption Island twist, we already have our first eliminated contestant. Who was it? And what else transpired in the 90-minute supersized premiere? My full recap will be up later [UPDATE: Dalton’s recap is now live], but to find out and sound off on what happened, read on for more. [SPOILER ALERT: Read on only if you have already watched Wednesday’s season premiere of Survivor: San Juan del Sur — Blood vs. Water.]
Many wondered if Nadiya and Natalie Anderson’s time on The Amazing Race would help or hurt them on this season of Survivor. We got an early and definitive answer to that question when Nadiya was voted out first by her tribemates, who specifically pointed to her gameplay on Race as a reason to get rid of her here. (In the “Serious Ouchie” department: She and Natalie were also eliminated first last time they played The Amazing Race. Time to see how she does now on Big Brother, I guess.)
As for the other famous face on this season, John Rocker was recognized by father-son duo Keith and Wes, who had very different takes on the controversial baseball player. Keith’s take? “He was an ass.” Meanwhile, Wes’ take basically amounted to not being able to figure out how many letters are in the word “Rocker.”
The biggest move of the game happened at the outset when Jeremy boldly insisted on being part of the first two-person duel. Whoops! He was then forced to compete against his wife Val, sending her and Keith to Exile Island (where she received a clue to the whereabouts of a hidden immunity idol that Dale may have inadvertently already taken).
In any event, Nadiya’s tribe lost the challenge and she did her best Francesca Hogi impersonation, being eliminated first in her last two reality competition show appearances. My full recap will be up soon, but you can sound off right her and right now in the message boards below as to what you thought of the premiere.
