Mikky Ekko made EW a playlist for a weeknight pizza party

Posted on

MIKKO EKKO

Mikky Ekko, who you may know as Rihanna’s co-star in her mega-hit “Stay,” will release his debut album later this fall (side note/friendly PSA: it’s almost fall). The first single, “Smile” debuted earlier this month and bodes well for the upcoming collection: powerful vocals, delicate finishes, catchy, anthemic choruses.

The Louisiana native, who currently lives in Nashville, has been gaining major momentum, spending last summer touring with Jessie Ware, opening for Justin Timberlake in London in October and is currently working on highly-anticipated projects with artists like Zedd, Gwen Stefani, and Rihanna.

EW reached out to Ekko, asking him to put together a playlist for an occasion of his choosing. What did we get? “10 Tracks to Vibe Out Your Tuesday Night Pizza Party.” Fun, specific, and nuanced (in nature as well as naming), complete with commentary on each selection.

Lykke Li — “Tonight”

“This song always gets me.  The simplicity.  Lykke’s voice. That voice!”

Tears for Fears“Mad World”

“It’s always nice to have a classic in the lineup.  At this point many people are familiar with the Gary Jules version, (the one from Donnie Darko… if you haven’t heard it, hear it;) but you’ve gotta know your roots… plus it’s super cool and not nearly as heavy.”

Jagwar Ma“Man I Need”

“I dig the vibe of this track.  It’s a feel good track with lyrics that tug at you.  It’s a nice ride.”

Jon Hopkins“Open Eye Signal”

“This is a track from one of my favorite albums (IMMUNITY).  I love putting this on when I’m running, walking through the city, or need inspiration for a new track. It’s a hard little tune, with the right amount of warmth to keep me feeling creative.”

Seinabo Sey“Younger” (Kygo Remix)

“Her voice is stunning and the treatment Kygo gives this track is second to none.  A badass lyric drives a real tune home while Kygo’s lust-for-life track keeps the good vibes churning.”

FKA Twigs — “Numbers”

“I’ve been a fan of Twigs since before she was FKA, but the art hasn’t changed.  This is a dope, vibe-y tune with production/mix ON POINT.  You’ll get a wink of approval from your snobby music friends. ;) And if you’re feeling bold, check out her vids, too. They’re stunners.”

Flying Lotus“Camel”

“Rewind a minute to FL’s album, Los Angeles; and you’ll find me with headphones on and the music cranked taking notes from a master.”

Tove Lo — “Stay High” (Habits Remix) FT. Hippie Sabotage

“Huge tune. I’m a sucker for the Scandi’s and this one doesn’t hold anything back.  The video’s awesome.”

Yeah Yeah Yeahs“Sacrilege”

“Press play. Rock out.”

HAERTS“All the Days”

“You’ll want to say she reminds you of a Stevie Nicks or a “insert classic voice here” sort of singer, but mostly you just love the way these guys emote together. I love running to this one.”

Young & Sick“Mangrove”

“A quirky soul vocal and psych-ish pop production weave a really interesting tune here. Stay with it and the payoff is really nice. I always feel like I’m melting.”
