From the runaway success of Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour to John Legend’s smash comeback to the entire ascendant alt-R&B scene, the neosoul movement is currently more relevant than it’s been since its late-’90s peak. Among the artists who’ve been bringing the style back to life is 23-year-old Brooklynite Nick Hakim, whose EP Where Will We Go Pt. 1, which mines the same mega-chill, Curtis-and-Marvin-indebted sound as first-generation neosoul troubadours like Maxwell (who recently brought Hakim out on tour), has earned him the beginnings of what seems to be a very solid fan base.
Hakim’s already got the Where Will We Go Pt. 2 lined up for release September 16. Its lead track is “I Don’t Know,” a dreamy, jazzy ballad with airy multitracked vocals and a brief but searing guitar solo that puts an intriguing kink into an otherwise super-smooth slow jam.
Hakim is touring through September.
