Marshmallows, rejoice! Not only did you successfully fund a Kickstarter campaign to get the movie you wanted made, you also managed to win an award for doing just that.
At Comic-Con in San Diego Thursday night, mtvU announced the winners of their first-ever Fandom Awards. Veronica Mars took home the night’s biggest honor, Fandom of the Year, beating out Community, Supernatural, and Free! Iwatobi Swim Club in the finals of a 32-nominee bracket. Tina Majorino, who played Mac in Veronica Mars, accepted the award.
In other awards news, Game of Thrones took OMG Moment of the Year for the series’ shocking “Purple Wedding” episode. Stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Natalie Dormer accepted the award from Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) and Youtube star Tyler Oakley.
Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and Retta (Parks and Recreation) showed up next to give The Vampire Diaries the Ship of the Year award. Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder accepted the award. “We want to thank you guys for all of your love and support of Delena,” Dobrev said in a taped acceptance speech. Added Somerhalder: “Our ship has been through some ups and downs and we are not sure where we would be without your support … so thank you, and we will try to keep it interesting for you.”
Teen Wolf took home Fandom Feat of the Year for the show’s fan’s efforts to raise funds to build a wolf sanctuary. Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, and Holland Roden accepted the award.
Several representatives from Community, including creator Dan Harmon and actors Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rash, appeared to present the Best Fandom Forever award to the massive Harry Potter fan base. Matthew Lewis (who played Neville in the film series) accepted the award.
“Congratulations to all the fans,” said Lewis. “I’m sure we’ll all agree that the greatest stories are the ones that stay with us forever, so thank you very much for believing in us. We wouldn’t still be here without you.”
Newcomer Hannibal won Breakout Fandom of the Year, while The Fault in Our Stars author John Green took home the special Visionary Award for his bestselling novels and his social media engagement with fans through his “Nerdfighters” projects.
“I am lucky enough to have been a member of some sort of fandom at every stage in my life, so receiving this award means a great deal to me,” said Green.
The ceremony also included a video featuring Joe Manganiello, Nick Cannon, Taryn Manning, Kat Graham, Amber Rose, and Gregg Sulkin pleading on behalf of their favorite fandoms. Channing Tatum and Chloe Grace Moretz were on hand to promote their next projects.
Following the awards ceremony, the after-party at Petco Park featured a performance from rapper G-Eazy and closed with a set by Linkin Park.
MTV and mtvU will premiere the 60-minute “mtvU Fandom Awards Special” on Sunday, July 27, at 8 p.m. ET.
