Evil Gets a Makeover in Disney Channel's 'Descendants'

Make way, Angelina Jolie — there’s a new Maleficent in town. Kristin Chenoweth dons the iconic horns in Disney Channel’s original movie ”Descendants,” which centers on a prep school attended by the children of classic Disney villains. (To keep the balance of good and evil, the offspring of do-gooders, including Mulan and Sleeping Beauty, are also enrolled.) The musical adventure, directed by Kenny Ortega, isn’t slated until 2015, but here’s a peek at some of the main meanies.

Maleficent’s daughter, Mal
Motherhood has not softened the Sleeping Beauty baddie (Chenoweth, seen here in a behind-the-scenes shot with Mal, Liv and Maddie star Dove Cameron). Ortega explains, ”Maleficent’s essentially saying, ‘When I was your age, I was already ruling the world, and you’re [wasting your talents] stealing candy from a baby.”’

The Evil Queen’s daughter, Evie
Newcomer Sofia Carson plays Evie, the boy-crazy progeny of Snow White‘s self-centered Evil Queen, who will be portrayed by frequent Ortega collaborator Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus). ”Her Evil Queen is so special and so hilarious, and the work she does with Kristin is just top form.”

Cruella’s Son, Carlos
The inclusion of 101 Dalmatians‘ canine-coat lover and her son, Carlos (Cameron Boyce, star of the Disney show Jessie), was a selling point for Ortega. ”Growing up, Cruella was one of my favorite characters.” Despite the matriarch’s penchant for puppies, her kiddo is oddly terrified of dogs.

Jafar’s son, Jay
Played by Booboo Stewart (X-Men: Days of Future Past and the Twilight films), Jay is a sticky-fingered rebel-without-a-cause type who’s trying desperately to win approval from his emotionally distant father, Aladdin’s nefarious nemesis. Hmm…bet a genie could make that happen.
